PRICELIST & ORDER BLANK THIS LIST is both a pricelist of my stock and an order blank. Scott #’s are taken from the 2010 Scott U.S. Specialized Catalog. UPSS Numbers (when used) are taken from the UPSS 19th & 20th Century Envelope Catalogs and the 2005 UPSS Postal Card Catalog. Where necessary, I invent my own numbers.
HOW TO ORDER:
1. DINOSAUR STYLE
If ordering
Dinosaur Style (thru the mail), you can print out this sheet, then circle the
price of what you want and mail it in with your payment. PLEASE circle
with a fine colored marker; any color will do.
2. ONLINE
Sorry, this is not a full-function
interactive website with a shopping cart and card processing ability. It's
Dinosaur-style; it only has listings. Still, we can improvise!
You
can send me an e-mail and type out what you want and the price.
OR, you can cut & paste the item with its description
and price.
IF the item exists in several conditions or forms (such as f-vf or vf for
stamps, or as Cut Squares or Full Corners) please indicate which you want.
OR you can cut & paste large portions of the list and
HIGHLIGHT
whatever you want. Green (the 00-80-00
shade for the techs out there) works well, as does
Red
(the FF-00-00 shade).

SELLOUTS AND REFUNDS This list
is backed by a pretty hefty inventory, and most of the items on it are
well-stocked. However, a few difficult items are "1-of-a-kind", AND I have
over 5,000 items of Postal Stationery in stock. Keeping my lists current
is a chore-and-a-half; occasionally I won't remove a sold out item quickly
enough. It doesn't happen often, but it will happen, and I apologize in
advance for the inconvenience.

may be combined with items from my other lists for a
MINIMUM ORDER
of $15. ALL ORDERS will be shipped via
Insured or Registered mail, for
your protection. Please add $2 for postage and insurance to all orders.
Smaller orders will carry private insurance and will have NO USPS markings.
There's no "handling" fee; just
actual postage expenses.
This is for U.S. orders only. Overseas shipments, please e-mail me in

On May 1, 1992, production of 18 Envelopes was
switched to a new, Recycled
paper. There was an official First Day of Issue with a pictorial FDOI
cancel (at Kansas
City)...but this event was not heavily followed, and these envelopes are scarcer
than

UNCACHETED FIRST DAY COVER INFORMATION
UNLIKE
"STAMP" First Day Covers, the true Postal Stationery FDC is an UNCACHETED FDC.
Traditionally, to make a "stamp" FDC, cachets (those pictures at the left of the
envelopes) were applied to blank envelopes. Then, on the "First Day of
Issue", stamps were applied and cancelled.
This, of course, is
impossible with Postal Stationery, because the Envelope, Postal Card, or Air
Letter Sheet is not available until the First Day of Issue. You can't
"pre-cachet" what isn't there.
Today, that distinction
is somewhat lost; many "stamp" cachets are after-FDOI cachets. But the
continuity from the old days is still there; recognizing this, the USPS sells
uncacheted FDCs directly for collectors.
POSTAL STATIONERY FDC QUALITY:
THE BUCK STOPS HERE
The Modern era of Postal Stationery FDCs begins with UC14 (issued in 1946) and
UXC1 (issued in 1949). Most of these issues are available in
Post-Office-Fresh condition, with the only problem being a little gum bleeding
on a few envelopes here and there among the early issues. There is also an
early era, running from the beginning up thru 1932. Condition, while
generally good, can be a bit spotty, as I'll explain later in this section.
In all cases, I do my best to keep the quality high. I'll always give you the best I can as dictated to me by the circumstances of the issue.
ALL FDCs ON THIS LIST ARE UNADDRESSED, unless otherwise noted.
WATERMARKS ONE major difference between Postal Stationery FDCs and "stamp" FDCs is the existence of watermarks on Envelopes...both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing in that they make the whole experience more interesting; it's a curse in that they also makes it more difficult.
MOST stamped envelopes exist with several different watermarks. In some cases; only one of these was available on the First Day. In other cases, several were available. By now, we pretty much know which are which, although in my career as a dealer in Postal Stationery, I've discovered a few, and I'm sure there are more out there. In some cases, there is a price difference; in some cases, there isn't.
Watermarks no longer appear on Envelopes; they went the way of the dinosaur when the USPS began using recycled paper in 1992.
The Scott Specialized U.S. Catalog, I'm sorry to say, isn't specialized enough. What you really need here is the Scott U.S. First Day Cover Catalogue and Checklist. It's a pocket-sized book, nearly 300 pages, usually retails in the $8-$10 range. Money well spent.
There are no watermarks on Postal Cards are Air Letter Sheets.
CANCELS: HAND, MACHINE, PICTORIAL The "First Day Of Issue" cancel was first used in 1939. Earlier issues exist mostly with standard machine cancels. Hand cancels are scarce. The rule was that the envelope had to actually be mailed, often with a "stuffer" inside to protect the envelope from damage. This didn't always work, especially if the stuffer didn't fit properly. Most early issues are addressed; unaddressed issues are difficult to find...but they do exist.
In the "Modern" era, the rules changed. The Philatelic Agency gave a higher priority to FDCs. The cover didn't have to be mailed, stuffers were no longer necessary, and a good supply of uncacheted issues was produced...with both Machine AND Hand cancels.
As a rule, Machine cancels have a small "dial" (the round area with date and location); Hand cancels have a larger dial. For some issues (like UX68 and UY25, which have very large dials) it's difficult to determine if the cancel is a hand or machine.
In addition to standard Machine/Hand cancels, some issues have special "Show" cancels (if these issued made their debut at a show, such as the ASDA show, BALPEX, MEMPHEX, etc..) or pictorial cancels. Pictorial cancels are generally hand cancels....and even when they're not, I list them in the "Hand" column.
SPECIAL, "NON-FDOI" CANCELS Not every Envelope or Card had an "official" FDOI. Some were released on short notice. These would be the "tagged" issues (U550a, U553a, UC37a, UX48a, UXC9a and UY18a) plus the Re-Valued Issues (U552, U553, U561, U562, U566, UC41, UC45, UX39, UX40 and UY14). For these issues, the FDOI is actually the "First Day of Availability" at the Philatelic Agency, Washington D.C., and they carry the standard Philatelic Agency machine/hand cancel (small (M) or large (H) dial with 4 straight lines). Catalog prices are for these dates. Some of the above exist with dates BEFORE the First Day at the Agency; these carry premium prices.
In addition, it was once the fashion when Envelopes were released, to issue the SMALL, REGULAR SIZE envelope with a First Day ceremony and FDOI cancel...and then to issue the SMALL WINDOW, LEGAL ENVELOPE, and LEGAL WINDOW a day or so later, at the Philatelic Agency, with the standard Agency (Washington, DC) cancel. These issues are difficult, and command premium prices...sometimes substantial.
The first LEGAL envelope to receive a FDOI was U563, Bowling (1971). By the end of the 1970s ALL envelopes were receiving FDOI cancels.
Finally, many regular FDOI-cancelled issues also exist with cancels from some city OTHER than the designated "First Day" city. These unofficial cities command premium prices, though these premiums are generally modest.
